Make Sure Your Toyota is Winter-Proof with Help from DCH Freehold Toyota

How is your Toyota Camry or RAV4 wintering the weather season? If you live in New Jersey, you know this time of the year can be particularly rough on your car - from regular storms to salt and sand to potholes, your Toyota spends the time from December through March under constant assault from the elements. Fortunately, there are a number of simple things you can do to protect your one of your most important investments.

The Service Center team at DCH Freehold Toyota recommends focusing on the following:

  • Tires. First and foremost, make sure your Toyota's tires are appropriate for the season. Winter tires feature deeper grooves and a different tread pattern specially designed for snow, ice and generally wet and slippery road conditions. If you do choose to stick with all-season tires through the winter, make sure there's a decent amount of tread left. Also, tire pressure, or PSI, should normally be a bit lower in colder weather.
  • Fluids. In particular, we're talking about oil, antifreeze (or engine coolant) and windshield wiper fluid. If you're expecting a particularly cold winter, you may want to go with a lighter-weight oil as it won't thicken and become sludgy like heavier weight summer oil. Check with your service technician when you have your oil changed. Also make sure antifreeze is topped off (a mixture of 50/50 antifreeze to water is typically recommended) and that your car's windshield washer fluid reservoir is full.
  • Brakes. Slowing or coming to a full stop will take a longer distance on wet, snowy or icy roads. Have your brake pads and rotors checked at the beginning of winter and replaced if necessary. Also, be sure to maintain a greater distance than usual between your car and the vehicle ahead of you when the roads are slick.
