Freehold, NJ drivers looking to spend their money conscientiously often look for the "Made in the U.S." tag on their clothing, or other products. It means a lot to support American manufacturing in an era where so much is being outsourced.
When it comes to cars, however, there is no convenient sticker. Cars have so many parts, that even if a vehicle is assembled here, its engine, transmission, axles, and spark plugs could all come from different countries. So how, in the modern global economy, is a buyer to know which vehicles are the most American?
The Cars.com American-Made Index (AMI) compiles information, and selects vehicles with at least 75 percent domestic parts. This year, only eight models qualified. For the second year in a row, the Toyota Camry was selected as the number-one vehicle on the AMI.
It is manufactured in Kentucky (where many of its components are also manufactured on site), and more than 6,000 full-time manufacturing jobs are tied directly to the Camry nameplate -- more than any other vehicle, by a wide margin.
