Get Behind the Wheel of the Toyota Highlander

Whether you opt for the gasoline-powered Toyota Highlander in the LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, or Limited trims or the fuel-conscious Highlander Hybrid LE, Hybrid XLE, and Hybrid Limited, you're going to enjoy your travels around Freehold, Howell, and beyond in this model that is a segment leader.

Power and Performance

The Highlander base trim has a 2.7-liter engine with 185 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. If you mostly got a Highlander thanks to its generous cargo space and you are traveling around Old Bridge solo or with one other person, then this engine will be fine. However, if you are going to have more people on board, we suggest bumping up to the 3.5-liter V6 that starts after the base trim. It has 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet torque. Mid-range models with the V6 engine also have Stop and Start System technology for extra efficiency.

Need to tow between Englishtown and Matawan? Then that's another reason to get the V6 engine. It can tow up to 5,000 pounds, compared to the 2.7-liter that only tows up to 1,500 pounds.

If you want to really enhance your efficiency, choose the Highlander Hybrid models. They have the V6 engine paired with an electric motor, and you'll still get an impressive 306 net horsepower. AWD is also available on both the gasoline and hybrid versions, in case you want more control during inclement weather.

Is the Toyota Highlander Safe?

Toyota's motto is "Let's Go Places", and with the Highlander you can do so safely! The Highlander has won many safety awards over the years, making it a three-row crossover you can feel confident driving your family around in.

To help you avoid a collision in the first place, The Highlander has Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) standard. These technologies showcase the accident-avoiding abilities of a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection and a Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist feature, which helps you remain on track. Automatic High Beam control cuts through the dim with fellow drivers in mind, while Dynamic Radar Cruise Control makes keeping a safe distance between those ahead of you much easier. Looking for a finishing touch? Opt for an upper-level trim that has standard Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

Interior and Technology

The Toyota Highlander seats eight or seven passengers, depending on which trim you choose. Seven-passenger seating sets you up for the captain's chair configuration on the second row, and that makes it easier for people to get out back. The upholstery offerings start with cloth, but you can move up to SofTex (faux leather) and cloth seats on the LE Plus.  The XLE and SE have genuine leather seats, and the top-level Limited has perforated leather seats for an extra refined touch.

You can continue to enhance your seating comfort with the help of available power thigh and lumbar support, heated second-row captain's chairs with a side table, and more. Long distance travels are going to be quite comfortable when you're riding in a Highlander.

For tech, there is the Entune™ Audio infotainment system with your choice of 6.1- or 8-inch touchscreens with voice recognition capability. You'll also get Bluetooth so you can make safer, hands-free calls.

Take it up a notch with premium technology like navigation with traffic and weather monitoring. You can even keep an eye on vehicle metrics with a 4.2-in. color LCD Multi-Information Display. Want to keep the kids entertained on a long trip? Install a rear-seat, 9-inch display-equipped Blu-ray Disc™ entertainment system. Lastly, full hands are less of an issue when loading the back, thanks to the power liftgate.

Space wise, the Highlander has a cavernous interior, and if you need to max out cargo space you get up to 83.7 cubic feet with all the back seats folded flat.
